How to Install Lightroom Presets

Lightroom has changed a lot in the past few years and now with the addition of Lightroom CC, and the updates to Lightroom Classic CC, it’s gotten more difficult to figure out how to install presets and what presets can be used where!

This will help you install Birth Becomes Her presets on Lightroom CC, Lightroom Classic CC (2015) 6, 5, 4, and Lightroom Classic CC Version 8. I am on a PC, if you are on a MAC, the screen shots will look slightly different, but I’ve included the text for MAC.

First, if you don't know what Version you are on, you can check by going to the HELP menu item and scrolling down to “ABOUT ADOBE CLASSIC CC” and click it, then a pop up will come up with the VERSION number.

Lightroom CC

We will start with Lightroom CC (on the go editing!). Lightroom CC is the newer editing version for tablets, phones, and desktop. Which is easily confused with Lightroom Classic CC, because of the name change. But Lightroom CC looks like this (below) and it’s a simpler version of the Classic Desktop version. First make sure your version is correct Lightroom CC 1.4 or later, and Lightroom Mobile 3.3.0 or later. To see the version go to Lightroom CC Help then Updates and this will take you to your Creative Cloud Console.

Click on the preset folder you are adding, and they will upload into Lightroom CC. You can restart Lightroom CC, but I’ve noticed that I don’t even need to do that with the newest updates.

Lightroom Classic CC Version 7.2 and Up

The new version of Lightroom, Lightroom Classic CC with it’s newer updates, uses a different file type for presets. Instead of the LRTEMPLATE files, it uses XMP files. This means that Presets that are created as XMP files can’t be used in older versions of Lightroom Classic like (2015), 6, 5, 4. BUT, if you have old LRTEMPLATE files, they WILL convert to XMP files once you upgrade. So your old presets are still usable!

On a PC go to EDIT and PREFERENCES, on a MAC go to Lightroom and then PREFERENCES.

Click OK and a file folder will pop up.

Open the SETTINGS folder and drop your Preset file folder in there. You do NOT have to unzip the file with the upgraded Lightroom version. (but it’s ok if you do unzip it)

If Lightroom was open when you dropped in your files, close and restart Lightroom. Your files will be on the left-hand side in the Develop Module. Normally they will load in alphabetically, however, sometimes they will go in under “user presets.” You can rename them and they will move if desired.

Lightroom Classic CC (2015) 6, 5, 4

The older version of Lightroom Classic CC (2015) and everything before that uses a LRTEMPLATE file type for presets. The way to install presets is fairly similar to the process above, but with a few extra steps. Lightroom 4 and 5 look a little different than this, but this is the oldest version that I still have to screen shot.

First UNZIP your file!

Click ‘show Lightroom presets folder’

Click ‘show Lightroom presets folder’

Next your folder will open with Lightroom Highlighted, click Lightroom.

Then you need to go to your DEVELOP PRESETS FOLDER.

Open the Develop Presets Folder and drag your UNZIPPED presets folder in there and then restart Lightroom. The preset folder is usually in your downloads folder, and you need to unzip it.

Clear as mud, right?
