Editing and Finding Your Style
Hi friends, it's Jenn here, I wanted to share some editing tips with you as well as some free presets that I've created just for you. If you are already on our Essence of Birth mailing list, you've gotten these presets in your inbox already. If you aren't, you can sign up below to get them yourself!
One of my favorite parts of birth photography, or any photography session, is to download my photos and see what I've made. I cull my favorite images into Lightroom and then it's time for the best part, EDITING! As I click away on each photo, I love watching the image transform into the vision that I had for it. When I'm done, I'm able to look at the gallery as a whole and seeing what art I've made.
A challenge that I've had to work through over the years is keeping the same (or a similar) edit/style across the entire gallery, while making it look consistent and true to my style. It's taken me years to do this and sometimes I still have to go back and make corrections! One of the things I notice as I do gallery reviews on each of our Essence of Birth course attendees, is that it's not just me who struggles with this. I see lots of galleries with inconsistent edits. First, let me say it's OK! You are finding your style and that's great! But here's the thing. You need to nail down your style and show it, because the clients who book you need to know what style of images they are going to be getting from you. They will know this by what you put out into the world, so that means your website and social media pages, blogs, etc. need to show your style and it needs to look consistent.
If you aren't sure of your style yet, that's really ok! Here is an exercise for you to try. First, don't worry about what you think people want, instead focus on a style that you love. Find that style and then put those consistently edited images out into the world. Here's a great way to help you narrow it down:
Pick 5 of your favorite birth images. Then make 3 virtual copies of them each in Lightoom, (right click, 'create virtual copy) so that you have 15 photos; three of each image. Then edit each of the images in the 3 styles you like. Next, you can sort them by style to look at them as a collection and see which you like best. Do you like that dark and moody edit, or does the clean fresh edit feel better to you? Allow yourself the time to play and find an edit that works for you. Then save it as a preset (Develop, 'new preset') and try it on some previous sessions that you love. Does it fit? If so, and you are feeling good about it, then make sure your website and social media work reflects the new style. Even if it means removing old images, or re-editing them. You want to show clients exactly what you are going to give them.
Additionally, I wanted to share an editing video that walks you through the workflow that I use while I edit. I've also created a clean duo of presets just for you! You can download them free, just sign up below and they'll be in your inbox shortly. I hope with the video and the presets, you can edit your next birth faster and with more confidence and ease.
