First off, I want to say thank you. Thank you for following us on this journey of exploration and growth. Jennifer and I are passionate about seeing women succeed in their birth businesses. We want to equip new or beginning birth photographers with tangible tools that make their lives easier (and their businesses more successful!) We hope you enjoyed exploring the Business Plan – Part 1 that we sent out earlier this week.  It's so valuable to sit down and explore what you're values are...what your mission is...and what your vision is. So often we just plow through our weeks with very little thought about how are current actions are leading to our future goals. The Business Plan is meant to help you get a sense of where you want your business to go...and what values will drive your growth.

So how did you do?

Did you find something that surprised you?

Were you able to tease apart what you're currently doing from what you hope to be doing in one year, five years, ten years from now? 

Jennifer and I have successfully launched not only our own photography businesses, but we've also created Birth Becomes Her. By having a clear mission AND a clear vision, we've seen such tremendous growth in the last two years. We truly believe that taking the time to establish and understand the ins-and-outs of your business will set you up to thrive. 


One of the questions we often receive is this: how do I find clients and when I find do I price my services? Finding clients is often the most challenging part of birth work because these families are inviting you into one of the most intimate and sacred experiences of their lives. Establishing trust is essential, and I believe the best way to do this is by having a deep sense of who you are as a birth worker. It can be tempting to just jump-on whatever the next birth photographer or doula is doing to bring in business, but if it isn't authentic to who you are AND the values that drive your business, your efforts will be shot. You'll find yourself exhausted from the work of trying to be someone else, and you'll end up with far less clients than if you had tapped into something that was true to you. It can feel so silly but one of the keys to succeeding in any business, but especially a birth business, is to take the time to discover who you are and what unique gifts you bring to your community. And YES, you do have something unique and valuable to bring to your community. If you don't believe this yet then that's your first piece of homework. Repeat that positive affirmation everyday if you need to: you are valuable and offer unique gifts to your clients and community.  

Today, we've included a sign up for the second part of our Business Plan. In this section of our Business Plan, we ask you to explore your market. Remember, this is a personal exercise that will help you feel more connected to who you are and the dreams you have for your business. What type of clients do you want to reach? What do you want your brand to be known for? What are other birth workers doing in your local community? What resonates with you? What doesn't? We'll also ask you to project the number of clients you want to work with...and to imagine how much money you might be able to bring in one year, two years, and five years from now. Claiming these goals is the key to making them happen. 

We'll be sending out an important email this weekend, exploring another key component to launching a thriving birth business. In the meantime, I'm about to enjoy some much needed rest and relaxation with my family in sunny California. I'm so grateful that my birth businesses are allowing us to live lives that our full of abundance and joy!
