Beautiful and Gentle Waterbirth in Spokane, WA
Esther Edith is a Doula and Birth Photographer serving Spokane, WA and Coeur d'Alene, ID. She shares from a recent birth:
Florines and Christopher invited me to serve as both Birth Doula and Birth Photographer at their recent homebirth. They had a beautiful, gentle waterbirth in the comfort of their home, surrounded by close family and friends, and supported by their amazing birth team, midwives Kim Bradlee and Tammy Wills. Florines texted me early on April 10th letting me know she was having consistent contractions. She asked me to head over, and I arrived at their home at 7:00 AM. Florines spent most of the morning working gracefully through each contraction, and Christopher and I supported her with back, feet, and head massage. Her mom arrived shortly, and busied herself with cleaning and cooking, and being extremely hospitable. Kim arrived in the afternoon, and after confirming that all was going well with baby and mama, we set-up a birth pool in the bedroom for Florines to use later on. The contractions started to slow down to the point where Florines could fall asleep, so we all agreed it was best that Kim and I left for a bit to give Florines time to rest. Things started to pick up again late that evening, and I arrived again around 11 PM. By this time, Florines was laboring on the bed, and leaning over a birthing ball. Now in active labor, her contractions were a lot closer together, and more intense. Her wonderful friend Clarita was also by her side, and together we breathed through each contraction, helping Florines change positions every so often, and working on breathing slowly and effectively… Shortly after Kim arrived, followed by Tammy, Florines moved into the pool, and the contractions gradually picked up as she progressed into transition stage, and finally to pushing. Christopher (did what many dads think they won’t do, but end up doing anyway, and) got in the tub with Florines, and supported her with back massage, andcontinual encouragement. I was amazed by how much control and calmness Florines maintained throughout her labor, and she kept this demeanor consistently through to the final stages of pushing her baby out, into the world. Rita Marie arrived at 4:46 AM, weighing 6lbs 2oz and measuring 19 inches long. Florines’ first words upon meeting her little girl were, “I have a baby! I have a baby!” Indeed, lovely mama, you sure do.
