Sometimes clients contact me far in advance for birth photography, but Laurel and Michael contacted me while she was in labor for the birth of her 3rd child.  They had 2 boys at home and were waiting for baby surprise to come, when they decided they wanted to hire a birth photographer.  We chatted on the phone and then I met them at the birth center a few hours later.  Laurel is a childbirth educator and she worked through each contraction with Michael supporting her.  She was calm and in control, it was an amazing birth to watch.

Once Laurel got into the water, she started smiling.  All mom's smile when they get into the tub after laboring without the water, its definitely a relief.  Pretty soon, we were all sitting around laughing as the midwives told us the reasons for one of their two rules at the birth center; Men are not allowed in the tub naked.  We all cracked up, but Laurel the most and I thought to myself, that she might just laugh this baby out.  It was amazing to watch, and I kept thinking what an amazing birth this was to be a part of.  I got up that morning, never expecting to be at a birth that afternoon, and here I was, watching a mom laugh her baby out.

After some intense pushing and help from the midwives, baby #3 was born, a boy!  Mom and baby were great, and we all continued smiling and laughing while we met this new little person and welcomed him on his first day earthside.

This is really how birth can be!  Lots of laughter, and smiles all around.  Just an hour or so before baby arrived!
