This birth was something special for everyone involved. This family had two girls and expecting their third, a surprise gender. This would be her second homebirth after a cesarean. Her husbands last minute guess was a another girl, where mom had a different feeling. Dad was an only son, to an only son, to an only son, meaning he could be the last man in his family to carry his last name on... Moms water broke in the night but not much excitement to follow, but she let me know what was going on with some not so consistent contractions. I had a tingly feeling and just couldn't sleep so after a few texts back I decided to just run out the door for the hour drive to her home. We laughed between contractions. She labored in the dark next to her Christmas tree. She was so calm humming through the waves. 35 minutes after I arrived she decided to use the restroom, where multiple waves continued to hit. She knew, I knew, call the midwife ASAP! The midwife, like me, also had an hour drive. Mom had a beautiful birthing room set up with a birth pool, birth affirmations, Christmas lights, and a beautiful and peaceful tapestry. She stopped in the living room and got to her knees. Baby was coming right then and there. A little worried the midwife wouldn't make it, it turns out, the intuition was strong and the midwife was already down the street waiting. The youngest woke up from her slumber, and I ran to get big sister up. Relief the midwife made it, mom started pushing. A few minutes later baby was here... "Babe. Oh my. Babe! It's a boy!"
