A joy-filled Portland birth: deep breaths, slow dancing, and lots of love
We're sharing the stunning work of Colette Hoekstra, a Birth Photographer based in Portland, Oregon. Be sure to follow her on her social media pages which can be found beneath her words about this beautiful birth. I had to grab a tissue!
When Anna first contacted me about birth photography, it was nine days after the birth of my first child. The fact that she was looking for a birth photographer at ten weeks pregnant gave us an instant connection. We were both brand new mothers - my child barely out of the womb, and her child just getting settled in.
On the day of the birth, I arrived at the hospital. Anna greeted me with a huge smile, and I had to ask her if she'd had an epidural! She was the happiest laboring mama I'd ever seen! Her husband, Sean, was an amazing labor coach. Besides massaging her back and feeding her ice chips - if he could have taken the contractions for her, I believe he would have. He didn't breathe while she hit her peaks. Despite all the challenges that labor threw at her, she continued to labor hard without any pain medication.
Little Liam was born at 3:21pm to his parents' joy-filled faces. After he enjoyed skin to skin with Anna and was weighed and measured, Sean held him and began to slow dance, swaying back and forth with his baby. Anna looked at both of her boys with tears in her eyes. Seeing those images now brings it right back for me. It's a birth moment that I'll never forget.
