Shelby's first birth didn't go as she had planned or hope. Pre-eclampsia led to an early induction, which led to an emergency c-section under general anesthesia. After Shelby recovered from her birth, she decided that she wanted to help other women have better birth experiences. She wanted to become a midwife. She began assisting births in 2014, and soon after...found out she was expecting her second baby.
Shelby and Dennis planned on using the midwife Shelby worked for to deliver their baby. As the months passed, Shelby attended births with Emily and helped countless women bring their babies earthside.
Shelby texted me on Tuesday morning and told me that labor had begun. Even though she hadn't experienced an unmedicated labor before she knew that now was the time. We all expected that her birth would occur later in the day, maybe even in the evening, but not long after I received that first text message, I received another telling me to come now.
When I arrived, it was evident that Shelby was in transition. She labored with such strength and beauty. It seemed like her body had given birth vaginally many times! Within just a few hours, she had her sweet baby in her arms. She received her homebirth VBAC, and I know she'll use her experience to encourage hundreds of other women as they birth at home in the years to come.
